Gov. Schneider thanks a Las Vegas original
For a few days, this man was your governor
That’s right, people, we said
Governor Michael Schneider. For a few days recently, Schneider — the president
pro tempore of the Nevada state Senate, stepped in to serve as acting governor since both Gov.
Jim Gibbons and Lt. Gov.
Brian Krolicki were unavailable to discharge the duties of the office. Under the state constitution, that made Schneider the acting governor, and he didn’t let the time go to waste.
Schneider affixed his signature and the Great Seal to a proclamation honoring former state Sen. Wilbur Faiss, who served in the upper house from 1977-1984, on the occasion of Faiss’s 98th birthday, which was on Wednesday. According to the Legislative Counsel Bureau, that makes Faiss the oldest living former member of the Nevada state Senate.
Among the achievements listed in the document: Voting for the Equal Rights Amendment; joining the Las Vegas Volunteer Fire Department (as its seventh member, in 1944); building a baseball field for kids before there was any organized youth sports programs in town; and running a motel, service station and cafe at Las Vegas and Lake Mead boulevards. And the money line: “Whereas, serving his tensure with dedication and commitment to excellence, Senator Wilbur Faiss’ strong work ethic and professionalism has set a wonderful example for his fellow statesmen, and his outstanding leadership will long be remembered.”
Congratulations to Faiss, and to (acting) Gov. Schneider.
