The Los Angeles Times, which broke the story on Monday of U.S. Sen. Harry Reid pulling his support of a magnetic levitation train between Las Vegas and Anaheim, Calif., didn’t catch it. The Review-Journal, which mentioned the development on Wednesday, didn’t catch it. The Las Vegas Sun, which published an AP story on the subject Tuesday and a longer follow-up on Wednesday, missed it, too.
What did they miss? The fact that Reid switched his support to the DesertXpress, a train project backed by Republican consultant Sig Rogich, only after months of Rogich saying very supportive things about Reid in public, and just last week signing up as co-chair of a group called Republicans for Reid. That, of course, is the real story here, as we pointed out on Monday.
So, Rogich supports Reid, and Reid switches from longstanding support of one train to Rogich’s idea, one that Reid publicly questioned in the past?
Not everybody missed the story behind the story, however. Our corporate overlord, who has a special place on his radar for Reid, caught on, too.
Now let’s watch to see if Reid uses his congressional power to assist the DesertXpress — a regular high-speed train that will run between Las Vegas and Victorville. It’s backers maintain it’s a private project built without government money. But there are a host of other things that Reid could do to be helpful. After all, Rogich has been so helpful to him.
Do we smell another juice train in the making?
UPDATE: Our humble apologies to the Las Vegas Gleaner, which, of course, made the connection on Tuesday.
