Obama campaign gets kiss of death

This just in, people: According to a Review-Journal news flash sent just seconds ago, the newspaper’s editorial board plans to endorse Illinois U.S. Sen. Barack Obama for president. (Its recommendation is for the Democratic caucus only; a GOP recommendation will come Thursday.)

Obama’s campaign was already suffering after being endorsed by the 2004 Democratic nominee for president, U.S. Sen. John Kerry. But the R-J’s backing clearly has weighted the freshman senator’s bid to the point where it cannot help but sink.

In the news flash, the R-J declares that Obama is the most viable of all the Democratic candidates left standing. But given that the R-J is a libertarian newspaper that daily rails against Democrats, universal health care, taxing the rich and the like, we have a couple questions that might put this endorsement into perspective:

Why would the R-J want to help any Democrat? And why would Democrats listen to a newspaper that mocks them almost 365 days a year?

Just a thought.

Oh, by the way, the rival Las Vegas Sun likes Clinton. And CityLife, while making no official endorsement of a candidate, predicted earlier this month that Clinton would win the Nevada caucus, and the Democratic nomination (and the presidency, for that matter).

Thank you for your comments on employer mandated tip pooling during your Week in Review interview.

While Nevada law clearly states that it is unlawful for an emplooyer to “TAKE” all or any part of the tips or gratuities bestowed upon his employees, the state of Nevada is currentlly allowing employers to blatantly control their employees tips as if controlling someone else’s money is not the same as taking someone else’s money.

The lengths our state will go to to appease our mighty casino owners is appalling.

Employer mandated tip pooling is the taking of tips by an employer so that he can use the customer’s tip to pay his workers who do not normally recieve tips. All we workers want is our laws enforced. While state laws say that it’s unlawful for our employers to take our tips, we workers have been telling the state of Nevada that employer mandated tip pooling results in the taking of our tips for over 35 years and yet they refuse to stand up the the casino’s and enforc our laws.

Employer mandated tip pooling must not only be prohibitted in Nevada, it must be prohibitted throughout our country. Consumer’s are not tipping to increase the profits of business owners. Business owners should keep their hands off their worker’s tips.

Steve, the R-J didn’t say Obama is the most viable of the Democrats running for president; they simply noted that he is the least objectionable in their considerable and worldly view.

I loved reading that editorial. As a lifelong Democrat who put it into context, it got my day started with a good laugh. Not unlike most R-J editorials, but considering the subject matter and the mindset of the crusty old white men who wrote it, well, it just had that special something that led to a serious case of the yuks.

Don’t get it twisted Steve. The Las Vegas Sun doesn’t like Clinton, Brian Greenspun likes Clinton. You know Brian right? He’s the guy who writes the column that reads like it came straight from a 13 year old girls’ diary.

Does your cynical headline belie a wish for a republican win in 2008?

You missed the point of the dreaded RJ emdorsement - first paragraph tells it all –

“As state Democrats prepare to hold their Saturday caucuses, cynical Republicans might well encourage them to choose Sen. Hillary Clinton, figuring her high “negatives” — the unusual number of Americans who tell pollsters they’d never vote for her under any circumstances — would virtually guarantee a GOP victory in the fall.”

If we want a democrat in the White House:
