This seemed like a good week for CineVegas. Just last night, the native film festival hosted a who’s-who-attended screening of The September Issue, the acclaimed documentary about Vogue publisher Anna Wintour. That film was released theatrically today, as was Thor at the Bus Stop, the locally produced feature film prominently featured during this year’s CineVegas.
And despite those issues, a recession still thwarted the fest’s plans for at least the near future. CV President Robin Greenspun and Artistic Director Trevor Groth just revealed a 2010 hiatus for the annual film showcase. “Given the current economic climate and the pressures it has created, we made the difficult decision to put CineVegas on hiatus for the coming year. CineVegas has become such a well respected film festival, and rather than allow the economy to affect its level of quality we have opted to put the event on hold,” said Greenspun.
The festival, which began in 1999 and was hosted at Bally’s, celebrated its 11th anniversary in 2009 at its current and regular host property, the Palms hotel-casino. This year’s most talked-about selections included Thor, indie hit (500) Days of Summer, word-of-mouth sci-fi title Moon, the recently released The World’s Greatest Dad and a wide slate of gay-themed features.
CineVegas plans to still host one-off and special events and screenings.
