Kabins indicted in Medical Mafia case
A lot of people have been hoping the medical mafia case would simply go away, and several of the potential targets have boasted all over town that the case is dead, dead, dead. Oops, not so fast.
This morning, the U.S. Attorney’s office took the wraps off the third indictment in the ongoing investigation. Las Vegas spinal surgeon Dr. Mark Kabins is charged with eight counts, including conspiracy, wire fraud and honest services fraud. The FBI thinks Kabins conspired with fellow Medical Mafia suspects Howard Awand and Noel Gage to essentially steal from a severely injured patient, Melodie Simon. Part of the alleged deal was an agreement that Kabins would not be sued for medical malpractice by Gage.
Readers might recall that one reason the charges against Gage and Awand were dismissed (and are now under appeal) is that Dr. Kabins demanded he be given immunity to testify for the defense in the Gage trial. Federal prosecutors had no intention of giving him immunity since he is considered one of the central targets in the massive investigation. Now Kabins will be facing his own charges.
Federal prosecutors are expected to speak to reporters about the new indictment later today and might even give some hints about whether additional indictments might be coming soon.
