Obama 1, Flowers 0

You probably don’t know this, but there was a big dukaroo in London tonight between President Barack Obama and Killers singer Brandon Flowers. What title were they fighting over? Hero of the Year! The prize? A Shockwaves NME Awards trophy (see bronze “bird” above).

I know, it’s weird that two Americans would be in the running for a decidedly British honor. (NME is a popular weekly music rag in the U.K.) But Obama is the most famous person in the world, and Flowers is arguably the most famous person in England, at least if you went by how many times he’s on the cover of NME.

Truthfully, Obama and Flowers were also competing against three other British musicians, only one with which you’re probably familiar (Oasis’ Noel Gallagher). And reportedly, the tight contest wasn’t between Obama and Our Kid Brandon, but Obama and the Oasis guitarist. In the end, the Brits went with Obama, and given that George W. Bush won “Villain of the Year (for the sixth consecutive year), perhaps this was a foregone conclusion.

Don’t fret, Brandon. When the President’s stimulus package fails like those ever-prescient Republicans swear it will, and our econmy buckles so hard that England’s own banking system also collapses, you’re sure to emerge triumphant next year.
